Nigeria: Ex-Minister Arrested Over Oil Theft

Former Minister of Interior and chairman of Integrated Oil and Gas Limited Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho has been arrested over allegations linking his company oil theft, according to Channels Television news monitored last night in Abuja. The former minister is said to be in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS), but this could not be confirmed last night as calls put through the SSS spokeswoman Marylin Ogar.

When contacted, both the police and the civil defence denied knowledge of the arrest, with a source at the NSCDC describing the news story as 'false alarm'.

On Thursday, officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and armed forces under the Global West Vessel Specialist Limited (GWVSL) reportedly invaded the depot of the Integrated Oil and Gas Limited at Apapa, Lagos. They alleged that the company, linked to the ex-minister, received stolen petroleum products.

NIMASA, GWVSL with the help of the SSS and military personnel allegedly tracked a cargo "M. T. Grace" which was said to be loaded with crude oil to the tank farm of Integrated Oil and Gas Limited.

The Director General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi said the vessel was arrested with 11 suspected pirates and eight AK 47 rifles recovered.

Captain Ihenacho is said to have described the invasion of his tank firm as aimed towards damaging his reputation and destroy his businesses
