Ready for some exercise: 15, 000 condoms have been made available to the athletes during the games
You'd think they might want to save their energy but it seems that Olympic athletes will be working up more
of a sweat off the field than they will on it this Summer. In a sign of what the world's fittest sportsmen and women
get up to in the Olympic village, a record 150,000 free condoms - 15 for each
competitor - have been made available to them.
For Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, it was the church that had
cold feet.
The Mississippi couple, scheduled to marry at the First
Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, was informed the day before their wedding
that they’d need to relocate their nuptials due to complaints from church
members.
Imagine the devastation felt by bride-to-be Te’Andrea
Wilson, who’d attended the church for over a year. For Te’Andrea, the church
was an important part of her family, as her father also attended church
services and her uncle worked a custodian there.

Forget oohs and ahhs, think wows and wide eyed excitement. A £27m budget, a cast of 15,000 plus some very familiar faces ensured the audience remained gripped for the duration of last night's opening ceremony in London.
The opening ceremony carried viewers on a musical and literary journey through
Britain’s heritage, from feudal to future. The show featured a recreation of the British countryside,
including live farmyard animals, and covers key events including the industrial
revolution and the creation of the NHS (National Health Service).
That narrative was wrapped around the story of
two girls defying their parents for a night on the town aided by social media,
their foray takes them through nightclubs playing music from the great decades
of British pop starting in the 60s to the noughties. The show was a riot of
color, noise, lasers and pyrotechnics but despite a near three hour running
time, it still managed to surprise and entertain at most turns as musical sequences, light shows, audience interaction and
video interludes ensured continuity between the scenes but the sheer scale of
the production, the actors, the sets, the machinery, makes this a stunning
spectacle.
The proud heritage of Britain and London was exposed on center stage and didn't fail rouse me into a patriotic stupor, and where Beijing
dazzled with the detailed synchronization of what seemed an endless army of
actors, London’s show cleverly emulated that Beijing effect with clever use
of technology. Boyle's opening ceremony was the equal of Beijing and more.
He had the spectacle, non for important than an inspired vision of the
five Olympic rings being forged by the workers of the industrial revolution. Boyle also had jokes and laughs; he had narrative, of a
cheerfully loopy kind, with some anarchic fun, and cheeky comic turns from
Daniel Craig, Rowan Atkinson and the Queen.
The final half hour in which the semi-forgotten Arctic
Monkeys played a genuinely incendiary two song set, Doreen Lawrence carried the
Olympic flag and Steve Redgrave used the Olympic flame to light a giant cauldron
made of torches did actively threaten to be perfect. But then good old Paul
McCartney came along to play a faintly horrific but reasonably endearing
version of ‘Hey Jude’ – Britishness restored.
In his wild, wacky and often hilarious Games kickoff, Boyle
kept his promise, delivering something unique that acknowledged the nation’s
people and its innovative creative spirit more than its leaders or its past as
a grand empire. The director’s stock got a major boost when he won an Oscar
for Slumdog Millionaire, but this audacious show should bump it
even higher.
A global audience of up to 4 billion people is expected to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics
The eyes of the world will be on Britain today, for the
opening of the 30th Olympic Games. The 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony will
have an extremely difficult task to outdo the stellar and absolutely
breathtaking performance put on in Beijing four years ago, but as usual, it'll
make for must-see television. The Olympics celebrates both the pinnacle of
human physical achievement and the coming together of nations, rich and poor
however, the success of the event depends on the efforts of volunteers as much
as anyone.
I of course, will be rooting for both the Canadian and
Nigerian athletes and wish them every success. The success of London 2012 will
be judged on the smooth running of the event itself, and the mark it leaves
behind it. I believe London Olympics is already a triumph in at least one
way as for the first time, every competing nation including the repressive Saudi
Arabia is represented by at least one female athlete.
The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics begins at 4pm ET
and ends more that three hours later, the three hour showcase created by
Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle and will
be watched by a projected crowd of 60,000 in the main stadium built in the
run-down area of London's East End and a global audience of more than one
billion.
Spectators will be urged to join in sing-a-longs and help
create spectacular visual scenes at an event set for the sporting extravaganza when
the 16,000 athletes form the 204 countries share the thrill of victory and
despair of defeat with about 11 million visitors.
So it's that time of the year for everyone to to sit back,
relax and get into the Olympic spirit. LET THE GAMES BEGIN.
The Greek triple jumper expelled from the Olympics for sending a racist tweet about African immigrants and the West Nile virus is speaking out against the decision to ban her from competition in London.
Voula Papachristou was left in Athens by the Hellenic Olympic Committee after sending a tweet that read, "with so many Africans in Greece at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food." Her comment generated a minor uproar in Greece, then became an international story when Greek officials decided to kick her off the Olympic team.
The triple jumper issued a wide-ranging apology after the ruling was announced. Her tone turned defiant on Thursday when she spoke with Reuters about the decision:
"I have not slept at all and to be honest I am still trying to come to terms with what has happened. I am trying to stay calm otherwise I would lose control.
"I am thankful to my coach and family and so many other people who have stuck by me.... After so many years of hurt and sacrifices to try and get to my first Olympics I am very bitter and upset. But what has upset me the most is the excessive reaction and speed of the disciplinary decision."
Though it's probably not best to talk about how you may "lose control" -- I don't think that's taught in Crisis Management 101 -- Papachristou has a point. The reaction was excessive and the speed with which it was made suggests undue haste. It's strange; Greek officials are usually so prudent and judicious in their decision making.
She should be angry. There have been no reports of Greek Twitter guidelines or rules of conduct for athletes. Officials appeared to make an arbitrary decision based on political pressure. They said they banned Papachristou because they didn't want to "place Greece in a very negative light." The thing is, nobody would have known about this had they not banned her. It was an isolated story with no legs. Now it's in its third news cycle.
Papachristou can be angry, but she can't be surprised. When you make a statement that touches on race or religion or gender in a controversial way, the hammer can be dropped quickly. Even if her tweet wasn't racist, it was perceived that way and that may as well be the same thing.
The 2nd video from the hit album "Empire Mates State Of Mind". This one features WizKid going solo on "Dance For Me", a smash hit song produced by the legendary hit maker Sarz. The video was shot in London, England and directed by the one and only Sesan. Stay tuned for more fantastic videos from the EME Album. Hope y'all enjoy this one.
I’ve been listening to UrkelAce's new track and I’m quite satisfied with what I’ve heard. The track “Recovery Tale” is my favorite of what Wunda Records has released so far.
Seyi ‘UrkelAce’ Akinlade who has been on several features including the popular “Hold you down” by T-obay brings his 1st solo track titled “Recovery Tale” to the world. He decides to produce this song with some help from his Wunda Records team mate and Producer Yung Jeff.
UrkelAce digs deep on "Recovery Tale" battling loneliness and exploring the emotional lows of love gone awry with lyrics like, "You Gave Me One Shot Of Love, But You See, I'm An Alcoholic" Instead of relying on massive cinematic synths, the producers create a fleeting atmosphere that evokes the song's theme of fickle love. This single will find a nice spot on late-night playlists, when everyone else has gone home. This is going to be a hit, I can feel it already.
Brand new video from Darey for his Sisi Eko (Remix) which features Flavour shot on location in Lagos
The big-budget video shot in the heart of Lagos in May, with a cast and crew drawn mainly from Lagos and South Africa, shows Darey and Flavour taking turns in trying to woo a beautiful and elegant Lagos lady who they spot window-shopping, as they ride together in the famous Lagos traffic.
Things get tense as the drama builds, with neither Darey nor Flavour willing to let go – motorists complain bitterly as both men cause traffic to further build up, but they’re so lost in the competition, that nothing would move them.
Who ends up winning the heart of ‘‘Sisi Eko’’?
Cameo appearances include Ali Baba, DR SID, Seun Kuti, Waje, Omawumi , DJ Jimmy JATT, Julius Agwu, MoEazy, Zaina and many others.
Last week, a young man's fancy turns to guns and death.
There is no excuse for the rain of bullets and terror unleashed in Aurora,
Colorado, early Friday morning by a man the media has already named "The
Batman Psycho" — aka James Holmes. The families of those who
died and the survivors of the attack will take years to recover. Gun control
advocates and gun rights stalwarts have another brutal Colorado attack to argue
over for years to come.
However, there are several conversations that will likely
not occur. It is unlikely that the aftermath of the Colorado shooting rampage
will be a moment when we as a country reflect upon the relationship between
masculinity and violence. There most certainly will not be a "beer summit"
about how accused shooter James
Holmes is one more entry in a long list of mass killers who are white,
male, and young.
When viewed through the
white racial frame, there is nothing in his deeds on last Friday night that
reflects upon the behavior of white people, generally, or white men in
particular. From this perspective, his dressing up as The Joker, and killing
more than a dozen people, and wounding many more, are the actions of one sick
person.
As folks have worked through many times before in the common
"what if?" game of race in America, if
James Holmes were black or brown this would be one more signal to the
existence of a "pathological culture" among said group. If
James Holmes were Muslim American the Colorado shooting
would be a clear act of "terrorism," and an example of the
Islamic bogeyman next door who has occupied the dreams and nightmares of the
"heartland" since September 11th. In one devastating burst of
fire, he has ruined movie going for an entire generation. He has
associated one of the most popular superheroes with the darkest side of human
nature.
In America, folks often ask, "what the hell is wrong
with black people?" In the aftermath of the Colorado Movie Massacre,
Columbine, and many other incidents, we need to ask, "what the hell is
wrong with young white men?
Sadly, that question will not be asked on a national stage.
White privilege is blinding. In the case of James Holmes, it also mutes a much
needed national conversation about the ties between (white) masculinity and
violence.
Wizkid and Skales at the concert's press conference
There was some extensive publicity about Nigerian
artist, Wizkid's first concert in Toronto, Canada at the Lagondola banquet
hall. The news about the concert spread like wildfire among the Nigerian
community in Canada, most of my friends were hyped up about the event and I was
convinced that it'll definitely be a concert to remember for ages. To be honest
I'm not really big on going to concerts as I don't particularly care for the
big crowds and the inevitable obnoxious person sitting behind, beside or in
front of me, however I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity of seeing
wizkid, one of the quickest-rising stars in Africa.
I went
to the concert with a couple of friends and we got to the venue early. The
concert was meant to start at 9pm but I guess it was running on
"African" time and didn't start till 11pm. We got in at 11 and we got
a table close to the stage and waited for the show to begin. The hall got
filled up quickly and most people in the audience were Nigerians, but there
were also some Ghanaians and other African nationalities there. I understood
there were some few non-Africans there too.
The show began with local acts who were virtually
unknown and there were no information provided about these acts to the
audience, after the Canadian acts performed, EME's skales was up next. Skales sang his hit single "Mukulu" along with some songs on the E.M.E.album, after he finished the audience clapped and cheered at this moment
everyone was waiting expectantly for the main performer to come on.
Then the audience heard the beginning of his song
"Love My Baby" and the crowd went wild. Wizkid came on stage singing
the song and the audience joined in, singing all the words and screaming. He
interacted with the audience, performed like the star he is, and brought all
his songs to life. For most of the show, the audience sang along and he seemed
pleased by the response he got. At some point, skales who acted as his back-up
singer was staring at the crowd in surprise and amusement because the audience
had taken over his job!
Switching back and forth between singing and
rapping, primarily in English, wizkid was never less than enthusiastic, an
entertainer above all, and one used to much larger stages than this one but he
only performed for 20mins. Accordingly, the show had the feeling of a
significant event. The crowd was slickly dressed, skewing young and African.
Surprisingly, wizkid didn’t look much out of place
but rather steady throughout the performance of his radio-friendly songs that
had him pulling out every trick possible to incite more deafening,
throat-shredding wails from girls. Wizkid's songs contain of an emergent style
loosely called Afrobeats by some, a mélange of hip-hop, R&B and other
traditionally urban sounds with elements that hark back to older African
styles. Wizkid who is signed to Akon's Konvict Music label, a rare example of a
mainstream contemporary African star being given an opportunity to work with an
American record label. Akon performed with Wizkid in Lagos earlier this year.
In all, it was a good show but a really brief
performance by Wizkid. The show had some downsides to it, as the concert
started late and most people who traveled miles to Toronto weren't allowed into
the concert due to some alleged incidents. The
main sponsors of the concert Microbell Media Group released a press statement about the incident. Personally I feel the event was rushed and unorganized
which is not new with Nigerian parties. Also it is in my opinion that there was no tangible
difference between the services extended to VIP ticket holders and regular
ticket holder. I'm a fan of wizkid’s music, but my takeaway from the concert is
that Wizkid as a person seems sleazy and narcissistic. Here are some twitter reactions to the concert:
First of all, I'll like to say my heart goes out to all the people affected in the town of Aurora, Colorado, may God be with that town and their families. Across the country last night, after months of anticipation, sold out crowds filled movie theaters to take in the midnight premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." But the thrill of the movie's release has been utterly dashed in the wake of the horrific shootings during a screening in Aurora, Colo., in which a lone gunman opened fire on the audience, shooting some 50 people, 12 fatally, authorities say. At this point we know very little about the suspect in the shooting, James Holmes, 24, an Aurora resident.
The Aurora Police Department released one statement earlier today, but it did not contain any information about a possible motive for the shooting or any indication of what Holmes has told police so far, if anything. Reports say Holmes's only previous run-in with the law was a traffic ticket in 2011.
Inevitably, speculation has run rampant about the suspected shooter's mental health. But one expert warns of making pronouncements until we know more. "It's really preliminary, and at this point it's hard to know what's behind [the shooting]," says Alan Manevitz, M.D., a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and an attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Manevitz says while attempts have been made in the past to create a profile that would help us identify potential rampaging gunmen, there simply isn't one. "In the past we've seen people come from well-adjusted and well-to-do families, as well as from broken homes," he says. "Some are loners and some have had friends. No one shooter fits a definitive psychological profile." In Holmes's case, Manevitz wonders if the young man has a previous psychological history or a history of threats, violence or psychotic thinking. "We don't know any of that at this point."
The mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater has prompted the cancellation of the Paris premiere of the Dark Knight Rises, and has raised questions about how moviegoers will react in the wake of the violence. I'm an avid movie-goer, and really affects me. I still find it hard to understand the motivation behind such an attack. I always felt comfortable and safe in the theater while watching a movie, but now I know my thoughts will stray every so often to the incident in Colorado and think about how scared those people were. A suburban movie theater is a place people are supposed to be able to feel safe and it seems like the typical reaction to a mass shooting in a public place is to tighten security where these kinds of things happen. And now it seems like you can't go anywhere in the states without a security check, does that have any effect on how we interact with each other? I believe it does, especially in terms of meeting new people and socializing at parties/schools because you don't know who out there is a "psychopath"
There has been a lot of shooting incidents in our society these days and I personally believe gun control in any nation is the right way to go. No guns should be allowed for any reason in our society. We are not a 'free' society if we allow our neighbors to collect weapons and use them at will, we are a stupid society.
One of the victims of the Colorado movie theatre shooting narrowly missed witnessing another shooting — in the food court at Toronto's Eaton Centre last month.
News of the shooting at The Dark Knight Rises premiere first broke on Twitter early Friday morning from panicked moviegoers trying to make sense of what they'd just experienced.
And as the morning wore on and the police investigation continued, the name of one of the victims appeared on Twitter.
"My friend Jessica Ghawi was killed in the #Aurora Shooting — she was an aspiring sportscaster — she will be missed," Natalie Tejeda (@natalietejeda) tweeted Friday morning.
Ghawi's parents told KSAT-TV in San Antonio, Texas, that their daughter, who had recently moved to Denver, was killed in the shooting, the station reported.
Ghawi's brother Jordan wrote on his blog that their mutual friend, who was with Ghawi at the theatre, said Ghawi was shot twice, and the second bullet "appeared to strike her in the head."
Ghawi, who went by the Twitter handle @JessicaRedfield, last tweeted "MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES," just after 10:30 p.m. local time to another Twitter user whom she'd been teasing for not going to the premiere.
And in an eerie coincidence, Ghawi's last entry on her personal blog was about witnessing the aftermath of the shooting in the Eaton Centre on June 2.
Busted Coverage, a sports blog Ghawi wrote for, tweeted a link to her last blog post.
She had been at the Eaton Centre and grabbed a burger and poutine in the food court. She had initially been looking for sushi — which would have led her to the sit-down sushi restaurant and prolonged her time in the food court — but "an odd feeling" led her outside, she wrote.
"Gun crimes are fairly common where I grew up in Texas, but I never imagined I'd experience a violent crime first hand," she wrote on June 5.
The receipt for her burger was time-stamped 6:20 p.m. Gunshots rang out in the food court only minutes later.
Outside the mall, chaos descended on the streets as emergency vehicles arrived on scene.
"Standing there in the midst of the chaos all around us, police started yelling to get back and make room. I saw a young shirtless boy, writhing on a stretcher, with his face and head covered by the EMS as they rushed him by us to get him into an ambulance," Ghawi wrote. "The moment was surprisingly calm. The EMTs helping the boy weren't yelling orders and no one was screaming like a night time medical drama. It was as if it was one swift movement to get the boy out of the mall and into the ambulance. That's when it really hit me. I felt nauseous. Who would go into a mall full of thousands of innocent people and open fire? Is this really the world we live in?"
"I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday," she wrote a few days after the shooting. "I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end."
Officials believe Holmes killed a dozen people when he fired into a crowded movie theatre in a Denver suburb. He was wearing a gas mask and set off an unknown gas in the theatre.
The Defence Department says Holmes never served in the Army.
Holmes is in police custody, and the FBI says there is no indication the incident is tied to any terrorist groups.
The federal law enforcement officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
AURORA, COLO.—A gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire early Friday at a suburban Denver movie theatre on the opening night of the latest Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.
The gunman, who is in custody, stood at the front of the theatre and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a theatre at a multiplex theatre in a mall in Aurora.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.
Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.
Officers found the gunman near a car behind the theatre.
Police have identified the suspect as James Holmes, 24. There was no immediate word of any motive.
When the suspect was arrested, police recovered one rifle, one handgun and a gas mask. A third gun is still inside the theatre, police said in a statement.
The suspect spoke of “possible explosives in his residence,” Oates said. Police used a crane to hoist themselves up to an apartment window on the third floor at the top of the brick complex and break in.
He said police also checked for explosives in the parking lot and at the Century 16 theatre and secured those areas.
Police spokesman Frank Fania said the suspect was carrying a knife, a rifle and a handgun when arrested, and one other gun is still in the theatre. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest.
“He did not resist, he did not put up a fight,” Fania said. The suspect's apartment building has been evacuated.
Salina Jordan, 19, was in Theater 8 and saw people hit in her theatre. She told the Denver Post one girl was struck in the cheek, others in the stomach, including a girl who looked to be around 9 years old.
Jordan said it sounded like firecrackers until someone ran into Theater 8 yelling “they're shooting out here!”
The police came running in, telling people to run out. Some police were carrying or dragging bodies, she said.
Witness Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he was inside Theater 16 and heard several shots.
“Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station.
Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw “people hunched over leaving theatre.”
Moviegoers didn't know what was happening and some thought the attack was part of the show. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke at the front of the theatre near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd.
“I told my friend 'we've got to get out of here,' but then he shot people trying to go out the exits,” Jennifer Seeger told NBC's “Today.” She said the shooter made his way up the aisle, shooting as he went, saying nothing.
Another witness told CNN: “We heard anywhere from 10 to 20 shots and little explosions going on. Shortly after that we heard people screaming. Then they came on PA system and said everyone needed to get out.
“As soon as we got out, there were people running around and screaming.”
Another witness said the gunman opened fire during a shoot-out scene in the movie, leading to confusion. The theatre also filled with thick smoke, he said.
The police chief said 10 victims died at the theatre and two at area hospitals.
Two people in critical condition were rushed to nearby Swedish Medical Center, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.
She said emergency crews told her staff to prepare for several more patients from the shooting scene.
Nine people were in critical condition at University Hospital, TV station KCNC reported. Many were in surgery.
Eleven people were being treated at the Medical Center of Aurora for gunshots and ranged from minor to critical condition. Two others walked in to be treated for tear gas contamination.
Denver Health had seven victims — one in critical and the rest in fair condition.
The youngest victim reported was a 6-year-old being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where a total of six victims were taken. Their condition wasn’t known.
U.S. President Barack Obama said he was “shocked and saddened” by the massacre.
“We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family,” Obama said in a statement.
Aurora is located on the southeast outskirts of Denver, about 16 kilometres from downtown.
